Celebrating and gifting in an eco-friendly way

December 31st, 2008

gift-basket-1thumbnail.jpg

Being eco-friendly and socially conscious is the new trends when it comes to celebrating and gifting. Many websites are thriving on this concept. One of them is GiveIndia that involves a simple procedure for being part of this new movement. Once you are registered with the site, you just need to state the cause you wish to support and the contribution you wish to make. The web link is then promoted. For example a newly married, a member of the site, printed an appeal on their wedding card for donating money instead of showering them with personal lavish gifts.

Many members have been raising funds in this manner through the website. You can pass the link to your colleagues, relatives, friends, and social forums. One of them informs to have collected Rs 60,000 for a social cause. Many see this as a chance to remember their near and dear ones who are no more in this world.

Corporate gifting pattern is changing as well. Corporate entities instead of merely ordering a consignment of cards from NGOs are making a contribution to help NGOs. The Concern India Foundation has a donor match program for both corporate world and individuals who approach them with a pre-set budget and a wish list of the cause they wish to support, and the foundation helps match these requests with the NGO concerned.

Even festive celebrations are turning eco-friendly. Coexist provides an environmentally friendly solutions through a range of eco-sensitive handmade decorations in cloth and hand-made paper.

Bollywood starlet Genelia D’Souza is one celebrity who believes ‘Green Christmas’ is a fantastic idea. She stated: “I think it would be a great idea to try out the eco-friendly material for decorating the tree.” Choreographer Marc Robinson and his wife Waluscha get their decorations and even the tree from New York. and do not buy new stuff every year.

Christmas tree and other traditions

December 24th, 2008

christmas-gifts.jpg

As Christmas approaches, Santa Claus is eagerly awaited by children and so also the goodies and gifts he brings along.

It is interesting to note that the popular view of Santa we all have today - with the sleigh, the reindeer and the chimney – was derived largely from Clement Moore’s ‘The Night Before Christmas’, the 1822 book, further reinforced further by an advertising campaign.

The Santa Claus story combined with the modern retailing phenomena and consumer culture has grown since the turn of the century to make gift-giving an integral element of the Christmas celebrations. Incidentally, there was no elaborate exchanging of gifts until late 1800’s.

The Christmas tree – apparently a German tradition – began in the early 700AD century. The tradition of a Christmas Tree gradually moved to the UK and US. Since Victorian times, people had been decorating trees with candies and cakes hung with ribbon, ornaments and candles. The first electrically lighted Christmas tree appeared in 1882. Mistletoe, representing the goddess of love (Frigga - Scandinavian), was used as a decoration in houses for thousands of years and is also associated with many pagan rituals.

The 12 days of Chistmas are the ones that separate Christmas day (December 25) from Epiphany celebrated on January 6, marking Christ’s baptism (the Catholic tradition) or the day when the wise men visited baby Jesus with their gifts. This includes great fanfare and singing. The Anglo-Saxon tradition revolved around gathering together for small, serene choirs on the scenic village green lawns to sing carols and popular Christmas songs that would entertain and please the passers-by.

This joyous festival truly enlivens our hearts with warm revelry that extends well into the new year! Gift your near and dear ones, the little children, your friends and colleagues to spread the joy of Christmas.

Ideas for gifting New Year diaries

December 16th, 2008

diaries.jpg

When it comes to gifting diaries, you can get innovative and imaginative to leave a lasting impression on your client’s mind. For instance, some years ago, communication expert Mudar Patherya has in the past designed many unique diaries. Many of them were based on a specific theme, related to the company’s core business.

For instance, the lafarge diary was based on the theme ‘character is the only cement, which holds the world together’ and was full of anecdotal stories. On the other hand, the standard chartered diary was called ‘life’s savings, a bank of inspiration’. The diary had inspirational tales from sports, religion, and other domains of life.

You can get diaries designed with peace and harmony as the core theme for this year has witnessed many turbulent events with Mumbai being hit by terror attacks and leading metros of India having been exposed to bomb blasts. You can spread the message of prosperity and brotherhood and building of trust.

If you are looking to get the job done in quick time, ADINDIA is your option. They make diaries that are flawlessly and fluently printed on the finest quality of paper with easy to use and customized formats. In fact, customization is the key aspect of the whole exercise. You should look to strike a personal note with each client, even in your formal gifting exercise on eve of the New Year.

These diaries are bound in exquisite Leather/Leather Jackets, Leatherite, PC+ and Hard Bound, Vinyl & Wiro binding. They are accentuated further by gild-edged pages, handy ribbon markers and Tab Cutted Months besides inclusion of Year & Forward Planners, STD and ISD Codes, Travel and Meeting charts, Weights, Measures and Health Guide, World Time, Currencies, Airports, National and International Air Distances and City Guide Maps.

Do not go for too flashy concepts and gaudy designs this year, we suggest, since even the corporate world has been shaken by the tragic turn of events in the city of Mumbai. This year, the celebrations are likely to be more low-key, and you should not go overboard in your gifting exercise in keeping with the prevailing sentiment.

What do the celebrities go for as a gift?

November 21st, 2008

Gift is a voluntary act that does not ask for anything in return. In Everyone’s life there are happy occasions that one wants to remember throughout one’s life. Gifts make such occasions memorable.

It is said that the price tag of a gift does not decide its worth. It’s the sentiment and the sincerity that counts. Yet all of us are curious to know how the big and mighty celebrate the special occasions in their life and what kind of gifts they go for?

Not long ago, we had published a blog entry that reported: “If you happen to be David Beckham and are shopping for your moody wife, what is it that you will come up with to pamper her? You do not just spring for her some fine wine, you rather pick up the entire winery. And this is what exactly Beckham did.

Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man (despite the market crash and erosion in the market capital of his group companies including the flagship firm Reliance Industries Ltd) reportedly gifted his wife a swanky Luxury Jet that was complete with a sky bar, fancy showers and entertainment cabins on her birthday. He gifted to Neeta Ambani $60 million Air Bus on her 44th birthday.

And there are rumors that he is even planning to gift her plush $1 billion home on her next birthday, It is going to be a 27 storey home with a health club, six floors of car parking and helipad.

It remains to be seen whether there are any changes in the plan owing to the turbulent times. But then gifting is all about celebration…even in tough times. There are many such instances of lavish gifting when it comes to biggies and celebrities across the world. We shall list a few next time.

Return gifts for your child’s birthday

November 17th, 2008

birthday-gift-basket.jpg

We are just through our Children’s day celebrations. Many Bollywood celebrities including India’s rising child star Darsheel Safary celebrated the day. Darsheel had a great time along with children from St Catherines Home on the children’s day.

We are just through our Children’s day celebrations. But when it comes to your little angels, there is no stopping celebrating and gifting. We shall continue with the theme of gifting for children.

This time, we draw your attention to an interesting article that asked ‘How much time do you really spend every birthday of your child to come up with a return-gift idea?’ It appeared in the Mint newspaper sometime back. But this is the perfect time to bring it up again to your notice as it deals with a very pertinent theme of birthday return gifts.

The writer of this insightful piece, Seema Chowdhry, mentions: “A birthday party is as much about the candles, musical chairs and cake as it is about return gifts for a child. The take-home tokens are an integral part of the celebration. Whether you like it or not, all children look forward to coming back home with goodies. When they get dried-up play dough, boxes of chocolates or crayons, they are disappointed.

The article quotes several parents and experts. Rabiba Gidwani of Mumbai-based b’ay party planner, Clowns R Us, mentions: “About 50 percent of parents tend to outsource birthday party planning, but they wish to do their own return gifts.”

Her advice to them is not to ‘deviate from the party theme and not to leave return gifts-shopping as the last or the least priority thing on their list because they will end up scrambling, and get the wrong things. Spending huge money is not the only way of making your gifts to stand out. So, how to go about it? We shall find the answer in the next posting.

Gift it like Beckham to prove the ‘worth’ of your relationship

September 30th, 2008

victoria-beckham-birthday-3.jpg

What birthday gift would one get for his woman who has everything under the sky at her feet? If gifting is all about proving the ‘worth’ of your relationship, the equation can prove to be quite costly. A recent high-profile gifting act involving an international sporting icon is a testimony to this.

If you are David Beckham shopping for your moody wife Victoria, what is it that you can come up with to pamper her and make her feel gratified? No doubt, in this case the scale of the whole exercise matters a great deal! So you do not just spring some fine wine, you are obliged to pick up the entire winery. This is what exactly David Beckham did. Becks reportedly picked up the tab on a multi-million dollar vineyard in picturesque Napa Valley to celebrate Posh’s birthday recently, her 34th incidentally.

It seems like a grand gesture, even going by David Beckham standards, so what made him to go for it? Gossip magazines were abuzz with reports that the vineyard was meant to keep restless Victoria busy. One gossip magazine reported, quoting a source to the couple,

“David feels like Victoria needs something to do other than shopping and going to parties. He is hoping she will get into the wine business and settle into some kind of regular routine.”

David Beckham unveiled the surprise on holiday with showbiz pals Katie Holmes, Seal, Heidi Klum, Tom Cruise, and Len Wiseman. Another source close to the celebrity couple revealed having a vineyard is also probably meant to keep Posh happy stateside.

“David does not miss the level of fame he had in England, Victoria does. Her experience in the States hasn’t been what she hoped for. Her clothing line never took off; she doesn’t have loads of girlfriends. Maybe this will be a good distraction,” narrated the source.

Becks and Posh relationship has had weathered many storms in the post, often on the brink of a breakdown. Becks is desperate to keep it going ‘at any cost’! That’s the difference between us and celebs! And he can afford it to. So we get a bottle of wine for birthday celebrations; he could get the vineyard.

Irrespective of this grand gesture, we still firmly believe that it’s the sentiment and not the hidden motive that communicates the sincerity of the act of gifting. A lavish gift cannot be a balm for broken hearts. It may only point to a lingering guilt conscious.

The sparkle and glitter of the Lantern Festival in China

February 20th, 2008

There are so many similarities between a popular festival in India, Diwali, and the Lantern Festival in China, which is being celebrated on February 21 this year.

The way sparkle and glitter of Diwali fascinates us all, there is light and joy all around in China on eve of the Lantern Festival. It’s akin to our magnificent festival of lights. Homes are lit up brightly. The skyline is resplendent with the magnificent spectacle of the fireworks.

The Lantern Festival in China, which falls on the fifteenth or last day of Chinese New Year celebrations, is a much-awaited occasion for families to come together and share their joy. As in Diwali, it’s all fun and enjoyment, more so for children in that country. As a tradition, they make lovely lanterns of paper. These are illuminated and it’s a spectacle to witness as these lanterns march up in the sky under the full moon. Often competitions are held and those who come up with innovative and beautiful lanterns receive special prizes. Sometimes a theme is designated by the village or city for participants.

The spirit of any festival is all about reaching out, bonding and spreading the light of goodwill, cheer and happiness, breaking all community barriers. Such festivals bring to the fore a wonderful and warm feeling of community spirit. The festive occasions not only light up the atmosphere but light up hearts too. People invariably give lovely gifts to each other to celebrate the spirit of the festive occasion. The  New Year celebration in China is no exception.
