How to maximize your LinkedIn profile through endorsement?

Endorsements are indeed a useful way of enhancing your professional and personal identity on LinkedIn. It’s an even easier means to help cultivate your connections’ professional brands. The networking site for professionals and businesses world over has witnessed a good reception, with over 550m endorsements already given out since launch.

A recent blog post on the site by Prachi Gupta offers useful tips to make sure that you’re maximizing the potential of this particular feature on your new LinkedIn profile:

It is vital to be thoughtful about exactly what skill you endorse. The platform encourages you to focus on expertise and skills that you can attest to personally or have yourself experienced. If you feel your connection is perhaps being too humble for their own good, try and suggest a skill they might not have listed on their profile yet. Remember the fact that the endorsee must accept the suggested skill before it appears on their LinkedIn profile.

Use this as a good opportunity for keeping in touch with your network. While visiting a connection’s profile page, you may get to see a module up top that suggests relevant skills for you to endorse. This gives you a chance to reconnect with an old connection through endorsing them for work that you have done together at your previous company. Do not see the skill that you had in mind? Just ‘X’ out the suggested one and then type in the one you would like to recommend.

You have total control of what endorsers and endorsements show up on your LinkedIn profile. Perhaps you wish to show only notable connections in your domain who’ve endorsed you for a specific skill. Visit ‘manage endorsements’ to choose specific endorsements/endorsers you would like shown or not. LinkedIn has provided the ability of hiding all your Endorsements if you prefer not to have any endorsements on your profile.

Say you are looking for particular kinds of business opportunities or making a career switch. You have the ability to show off select skills and endorsements on your profile by going to ‘edit’ mode on your profile. Check the pencil icon next to the skills and expertise section, and add or remove skills from your profile. And only the skills as well as endorsements that you think best symbolize who you’re or wish to be professionally will be highlighted on your LinkedIn profile.
