A trade body that blends tradition and marketability

A committed alternative trading organization, Asha Handicrafts has been striving to create awareness of the concept and advantages of Fair Trading. This not-for-profit making entity is determined to make sure the benefits of handicraft production actually reach the craftspeople.

Since its formation in 1975, the body has provided valuable marketing support to various craftsmen co-operatives and groups of small scale handicraft producers, who are disadvantaged largely owing to lack of financial awareness, knowledge of management skills and promotional as well as resources and network. Here’s how the organization supports them:

By buying from artisan groups directly and paying in advance on orders, it looks to increase the income levels and sustainability of producer groups/artisans. Its contributions have allowed artisans to improve their living standards, to maintain their livelihoods, and to enrich the tradition. Asha Handicrafts, in a way, is playing an important role in filling the gaps. It also offers training and teaching facilities in vocations like tailoring and metal work, thus establishing local groups of craftspeople.

Sustainability in a larger context is the core aim of Asha Handicrafts, essentially a broad network of producer groups across India. They now look up to it both for overcoming logisitical difficulties that they face during production and marketing.

Being a member of the International Federation for Alternative Trade, the body shares their key goals like commitment to fair trade; ethical and effective workplaces; transparency about business practices; equal employment opportunities; advocacy of fair trade; and Concern for people and the environment.

Asha looks to meticulously maintain specifications regarding design, size and workmanship. Its production team constantly follows up with the producer concerned for adherence to the delivery schedule. It claims to maintain its contract price to the buyer, even in case of operating cost increases. Apart from its in-house products, Asha can work to a customer’s specific needs, modifications and preferences, offering an exclusive range of products.
