Sky is the limit for gifting: eclipse observation packages

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Travel firms are wooing sky watchers on eve of the 21st century’s longest solar eclipse. It takes place on July 22. You can opt to watch it with your friends and family from a Boeing above the clouds in Gaya. You may grasp more about the natural phenomenon from experts on the Benares ghats or may even fly to China, attend a workshop and get down to business in Anqing.

Cox & Kings has on offer a special tour package to watch the spectacular event from up close. You can take up a window seat based on your budget on a Boeing 737-700 to watch the solar eclipse. The package costs between Rs 29,000 and Rs 79,000. Cox & Kings has tried this idea for the first time.

The eclipse journey will last for about three hours. The flight will take off from Delhi and hold over Gaya during the eclipse period. The aircraft at a height of 41,000 feet will be intercepting the middle of the eclipse shadow for an unforgettable experience you can gift your family. Those taking the right side seats will get to watch the ‘sun side’, whereas those on the left can witness the shadow on the earth.

Vibgyor Travels is offering a package to inbound tourists for an eclipse holiday to the holy city of Benares. A 9 nights-10 days package comprises eclipse observation with help of experts from the river Ganges. Guides will assist visitors to understand the eclipse better.

If one wishes to enjoy a glimpse from abroad, Space Technology & Education is hosting an ‘eclipse trip’ to the Chinese city of Anqing. According to Amit Verma, several photographic experiments have been outlined on this trip to the eclipse site.

The China tour includes a ride on the Maglev train at a speed of 431 kmph. It comprises visits to Beijing, Shanghai and, of course, the Great Wall. A multimedia enabled workshop will be held for tourists.

Know about TBZ original here

If you are on a constrained budget, consider silver jewelry. It was long considered gold’s poor cousin but that image has undergone a change! Silver thalis are now a must-have at ceremonies. Cute silver boxes are there for holding mouth fresheners and silver coins are now commonly presented in embroidered bags. One definitely is spoiled for choice!

Silver goes best with diamonds and pearls when it comes to jewellery. For anything else, pure carved silver makes great ornamental jewellery boxes, showpieces, masala boxes and thaalis for special occasions. While silver watches, belts and jewellery are good for senior partners and for cinching potential deals, silver utensils are preferable for traditional of festive occasions.

Silver signifies faith and purity as a color, and is as glamorous as gold, so go for a silver bag. For men, stick to watches, silver coins or a silver household object. You may buy a silver or silver-plated desk clock. These days one does get footwear with silver heels and heavy silver watches with diamantes in the dial.

Glittering gift choices

Monday, July 13th, 2009

In a blog post last week, we considered some exquisite jewelry sets for collection and gifting. Nirvana range has some unmatched contemporary designs that have found an echo in the modern woman’s heart.

A case in point is the swirl of emotions captured in its new Swirlz Collection. Shaped and styled rhythmically, it celebrates the feelings of womanhood. Carved and styled into flowing patterns of twists and twirls, the exquisite collection includes intricate earrings - pendant sets.

You can accessorize it with something like Milano’s reptile print handbags, a stylish gift for a woman! The collection is unique having been crafted from top quality leathers dyed, embossed to look like a ravishing reptile skin. This famous Italian luxury brand has on offer beautiful bags for women. These handsome handbags are crafted with supple, supreme quality Italian leather that is embossed with snazzy snake and crocodile prints.

The 22 ct Gold Collection from Ola Jewellery is another glittering choice to bring that glint into a female’s eyes! The range is aimed at women who like to wear jewellery every day at work or while going out, as well as those who normally prefer to use it for special occasions. The 22ct collection comprises rings and superlatively finished pendants.

And why not consider jewelry for men as well? Times are changing, and so also the concepts of fashion! Jewelry is no more limited to females and not their prerogative anymore, so to say! Keeping this in mind, many jewelry brands are launching exclusive creations for men!

The Cocoon, a jewelry store in New Delhi, has on offer diamond jewelry collection for men, including a simple ring for men who prefer minimalism, a more flamboyant ring and other variations. Fantastic gifting range from the Frazer and Haws

The Frazer and Haws brand is linked to the House of Hennell, founded in London in 1736 by David Hennell who created elegant silverware for the English aristocracy. Hennell jewelry is acknowledged for its classic yet contemporary feel.

Among the most renowned, oldest and recognized brands for silverware, they have exclusive showrooms at upmarket locations in invariably all leading metros of India. Every silver object from Frazer and Haws bears a very special hallmark of proud history of their hand-crafted creations.

The Frazer and Haws has on offer exquisite range of silverware like trays edged with sun motifs or a trellis of blooms, nut bowls with delicate pierced patterning, like lace in silver, elliptical glass vases in burgundy or sea blue, with superb silver accents and trophies to suit myriad occasions.

Silver and gold is linked to India’s festive spirit. For instance, Diwali is a traditional festival of lights when it is considered essential that you add a goodluck charm, which is considered to be pure and sacred. This is done in the form of a gold coin or silver with a carving of the goddess Lakshmi on it.

Taking a cue from India’s deep-rooted spirituality, the Frazer and Haws present the trishul (trident), reflecting the auspiciousness of the Om, Lord Hanuman in muted terracotta on a marble base, gilded with a sun-flame crown, Ganeshas in terracotta harmoniously melded with silver ornamentation, Ganpati katori (bowl) resembling an open oyster and a silver rudraksha-textured necklace.

Their festive collection reflects a distinctive Indian sensibility that is visible in silver diyas (lamps), the swastika, or the lotus. Other offbeat hints to the Indian mindset are evident in a nimbu-mirchi assemblage in silver and crystal, to ward off bad spirits and an ornate comb-and-mirror shringar trousseau set, which bonds silver with wood.

Exquisite jewelry for collection and gifting

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Gold, as the experience thus far shows, is preferably commoditized in the country. It has some inherent emotional and spiritual strength in context of Indian history and mythology. If the connection is explored well, sales and marketing of gold artifacts holds great potential here, according to historian Dr Devdutt Pattanaik.

As we reported in the previous blog, he has been engaged by World Gold Council to explore its intrinsic value. As mentioned, WGC is looking to strike a sentimental chord with those who are spiritually inclined. It is set to tie up with leading temples trusts such as Vaishno Devi Shrine Board for manufacturing jewelry items. WGC is targeting the segment of an affluent working population, in the age group of 35-40, who has the capability to buy these luxurious items. It aims to bring precious luxury items and more affordable jewelry.

Of course, on other side of the spectrum are leading jewelry designer brands like Tanishq that regularly comes up with contemporary collections. A case in point is their popular Jodhaa & Akbar. The Jodhaa Akbar pretty Pret Line is a series of jewelry in 22k pure gold - brilliantly embossed with precious and semi-precious stones in Polki, Kundan, and magnificent Meenakari works.

As the name itself suggests, the captivating collection is inspired by royal jewels of epic love saga of Jodhaa-Akbar. It has on offer the power of the nine planets; the energy of nine gemstones brings good fortune to the wearer and chases away evil forces.

Here are more exquisite jewelry sets that you may well consider for collection and gifting. One among them is Nirvana diamond jewelry range, ravishing diamond jewelry series that looks to address the new age customer who buys jewelry as a fashion statement, and not merely as a valuable to keep.

Get a special gift for your Guru today

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Our teachers are our most valuable resource whether they teach a child during the school hours or in the after school informal talks. They are shaping tomorrow’s generation into responsible citizens. It is a service with a selfless motive, albeit seldom appreciated. Even though teachers never expect it, they do deserve a big THANK YOU. Guru Purnima is the occasion to express our gratitude, and flowers sure are perhaps one of the best means of saying it silently.

While gifting flowers on Guru Purnima, try to find out your teacher’s favorite flower, and make sure you gift it. If you cannot know your teacher’s choice for some reason, there is no need to despair. You can present a nice bouquet comprising different varieties of flowers, arranged nicely. Some of the popular varieties that your teacher would appreciate are Roses, Carnations, Orchids, Lilies, etc.

Flowering shrubs are perfect for any occasion, and Guru Purnima is no exception. Their wide array of form, foliage, flowers can yield year-round fruitful joy.Shrubs that flower almost throughout the year; they have bushy shape and size. They offer a long-lived, low-fuss, eye-catching framework in any gorgeous design. Ixora, Pentas, Hibiscus, Mosanda, Lantana etc. are the popular choices.

You may get flowers either from your home garden or from market, but make it a point to present them well as a beautiful bouquet. Cover it with thin plastic sheet from the sides, leaving the top open, and decorate it with colorful ribbons. Do not forget to tag a small card, with a thoughtful message on it.

You can also ask a florist shop to deliver the bouquet to your teacher’s home early morning wishing him/her happy Guru Purnima. In this way, you will be the first one to wish your teacher on this special day. Remember that the gesture of giving gift is more valuable than the gift itself and its price tag.

Significance and legend of Guru Purnima

Monday, July 6th, 2009

The day of full moon (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadh is traditionally marked and celebrated as Guru Purnima. On this day, the Guru is worshipped by the disciples.

Also known as Vyas Purnima, the occasion is devoted to sage Ved Vyas, and is celebrated in his veneration. The auspicious occasion of Vyas Purnima chosen for paying respect to the teacher is no less significant, since Vyas is considered the Adi (original) Guru, who classified the Vedas, penned the Puranas, the mythological tales, and the epic saga of Mahabharata. He is credited with the composition of the authentic treatise of Brahma-sootras that explain the background of holy Vedas.

The Guru in the Hindu tradition is perceived as an embodiment of God. For, it is through his guidance and grace that an individual attains the highest state of bliss and wisdom. Devotional worship of the teacher - the preceptor - is one of the most elevating features of the Hindu culture.

The Swaminarayan Sanstha, a socio-spiritual body with its roots in the Vedas scriptures, elaborates on the Need of a Guru in the following words: “The Sanskrit root ‘Gu’ means darkness or ignorance. ‘Ru’ denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore one who removes darkness of our ignorance is a Guru. Only he who removes our ultimate darkness, known as Maya, and who inspires and guides us on to the path of God-realization is the true Guru. Students also refer to their school teacher or college lecturer as Guru. The connotation of the word Guru in this case is one who imparts temporal knowledge (Apara Vidya) and is thus accordingly offered respect.”

Even a genuine spiritual aspirant, no matter how intelligent or brilliant, can never attain complete knowledge by his own endeavor. One can only attain salvation by respecting and serving the true Guru who plays a key role in guiding the aspirant.

Those who understand the teacher’s glory only will be able to achieve enlightenment and knowledge. We acknowledge the contribution of a teacher in our life on Guru Purnima. A gift will serve as a genuine gesture of our gratefulness toward our teachers.

Gold artifacts with a spiritual connection

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Here is an opportunity in the offing for those keen on gifting exquisitely crafted, classic and glittering gold items. According to media reports, the World Gold Council is all set to explore spiritual connection of the popular yellow metal with India’s heritage and mythology.

WGC, as is known, has developed into a worldwide organization funded by the leading gold mining firms. The council apparently is searching for the precious metal’s intrinsic value beyond prices. It is thinking of appointing an expert on Indian mythology, Dr Devdutt Pattanaik, as a consultant.

The famous writer of several research based books comprising ‘The Book of Ram’, Dr Devdutt Pattanaik will be mandated to come up with innovative ways for fitting gold in spiritualism. As reported, the council is likely to engage him for the project by October. The first glimpse of the concept is slated to be offered by as soon as April 2010.

Now, gold is considered more as a valuable asset for future. Primarily stored more for its ornamental value in the past, people now hold it as an investment. However, WGC is trying to look at gold beyond just market price. For this it will try to strike a mythological chord with those spiritually inclined. The council is planning to work with leading temples trusts like Vaishno Devi Shrine Board to manufacture jewelry items, either by themselves or by engaging local manufacturers.

Ajay Mitra, MD (India sub-continent) for WGC, has been quoted as saying: “The concept has immense potential; the metal will not only accumulate all the known forms of mythology like forming symbols (such as trishul, om), rituals and telling story, but will also bridge the gap between the ancient art of story-telling and rituals as of today.”

These gold artifacts with a spiritual connection, once they are released, are bound to make a popular gifting choice.
